Burghfield Team Squash

Team Squash – Burghfield Squash Club

We recently had a query via the Web Site about the Team Squash at Burghfield and I committed to issue a few words to explain what we do, when and to put it into context for anyone unfamiliar with competitive squash.

Some of you will know all this and can skip down to the latest match reports below.

Burghfield currently have a Team in the Berkshire County Thursday night League and the Vets League which is played on Monday’s. Teams are made up of 5 players ranked by ability. The Vets are Over 45’s for Men and 40 for Ladies. Matches are fortnightly Home and Away and start at 7.30pm, this season’s Home fixtures should you care to watch them are as follows:-

The Home fixtures for the Thursday Night team are: -

Thu 14 Oct 2021 19:30 Burghfield 1 versus Datchet & Windsor 2
Thu 11 Nov 2021 19:30 Burghfield 1 versus Temple Wycombe 2
Thu 09 Dec 2021 19:30 Burghfield 1 versus Nuffield 1
Thu 06 Jan 2022 19:30 Burghfield 1 versus Hart 1
Thu 17 Feb 2022 19:30 Burghfield 1 versus Torquay Squash

The Home fixtures for the Vets are:-

Mon 15 Nov 2021 19:30 Burghfield versus Wellington 3
Mon 07 Feb 2022 19:30 Burghfield versus Royal Berkshire 1
Mon 21 Feb 2022 19:30 Burghfield versus Caversham PV 2
Mon 21 Mar 2022 19:30 Burghfield versus Bounty 2

The Thursday Team play in Division 2 of 6 although there is a Premier League which Sky do not currently televise. But give it time. The Vets are in Division 3 of 3. The players come from the Club and can be found languishing in our internal Box Leagues, so you will play them, know them or see them playing. Historically we have had more teams and if the demand for more access to Team squash arises we will enter additional teams. There is going to be a Business League again this year starting in January and we hope to have a team in this which traditionally has been used to give debuts to people new to team squash.

The Leagues and results are published on the Berkshire County Squash Web Site and can be found at the following URL’s:-

2021/2022 - Match reports – From the Captain’s

Burghfield 1 vs Hart 1 AWAY – Lost 5 – 0 (20 – 2)

One to get out of the way. A trip to Aldershot Garrison courts, colloquially known as “I hate playing there”, offering an atmosphere as cold as the courts. Tim at one with the only points of the night achieving his customary 5 games. As the order moved down the squash only got worse, and little joy was had until the post-match curry club at Wetherspoons.

Burghfield 1 vs Meadway & Rivermead 1 HOME – Win 5 – 0 (20 – 3)

Terrific to be back at the home of squash. The corridors were a buzz with the sound of the fan heating the court to a balmy temperature. Arch rivals Meadway duly dispatched back to Bradfield (assumingly soon to be renamed Meadway & Rivermead & Bradfield Squash Club). Matt kicked off with an assured victory and set the tone for the night. Gareth chipped in with a marathon affair, wearing down both his opponent and the balcony. The only disappointment of the night for Tim, unable to get his 5 games in having to win 3-1.

Burghfield Vets Vs Caversham Sonning – Home – Lost 1-4 (10 – 18)

This was the first competitive team match for 2 years for the Vets Team who haven’t been playing in the Thursday night teams either and it showed. We were comprehensively short of a gallop and a proper pre season. We lost 3 matches 3-2 and would hope to improve on this. Our Man of the Match was Paul who Won at No 4 although his opponent started in a back brace had a wooden leg and a glass eye. However, Paul wasn’t put off by these traditional Vet’s ruses and duly despatched his man for which I as Vets Captain am truly grateful.

If you are interested in playing Team Squash please let any of us know and we will add you to our list of potential players. You are welcome to pop in and watch a match or part of one to see what it entails.

We will try to publish some brief match reports through the season so you can see how we are getting on.
