Burghfield Squash February Newsletter

Hello everyone and I hope you are all well and hitting life’s sweet spot whenever you want to, a concept I have never fully understood as my racket doesn’t seem to have one.

Anyway to business, I have some news and updates and want your feedback on some issues that have been raised and we on “the Committee” need your views on.

Junior Squash

For a number of months our new Junior Coaching team have been beavering away trying to inculcate the youth of Burghfield in the ways of the little black ball. Early days but good progress is being made and our kids are enjoying it and even appearing in one of the local Berkshire tournements. Well done to the Coaching team and our players. Please keep it going, it will be great to see if one day one of ours does very well against one of theirs! As the old adage says you have to start somewhere and sometime and we have started and hopefully glory beckons…

On that note it has been proposed that we have a Junior Club Night so we propose to book the courts out on Friday afternoons between 4pm and 5.40pm for this and we’ll see how it goes.

The Junior Section have an event on 15th April between 10am and 3pm so please note the Courts will be out of use for that short period. The system will be noted.

Social Media

We now have a Twitter Account in the portfolio and a dedicated team of correspondents writing and researching on our behalf. Actually my Daughter Rachel is looking after it and if I don’t promote it my Wife will thump me so please have a look and do that following thing etc. All joking aside it is another wing to our bow and may get us a wider profile which we need to attract some interest in us as a Club.

Twitter URL is:

https://twitter.com/BrghfldSqshClb

The Twitter handle is:

@BrghfldSqshClb

Please follow, like and retweet. Any news, fixtures, sessions that you want to be promoted to be sent to Gareth and he will liaise with Rachel. Note none of them trust me in this enterprise. Doh!

Ladies Champion/Ambassador

We don’t have a lady on the Squash Committee. As a Club we have quite a few Ladies and girls playing but nobody in “the management” to represent their views. We would like somebody to take on the role of being the figurehead for the girls in the Club. The role can be as big or small as you want to make it, another one of our mantras being if you have a good idea we’ll support you but to some extent you will need to drive it through as we all do this for the love of the game and have to accept that our time is limited. That being said we will support any initiative that is practical and we are legally licenced for. We need a Lady volunteer please even if all you do is the occasional welcome speech and tour to new members. I’m sure for many people being met and welcomed by someone other than me and Graham would be seen as a benefit!

My Courts Image and Profile

We have never really pushed the My Courts image and profile but in truth it is something that would make us more user friendly to newcomers. If they could see that the prevailing membership are not all related to Jansher Khan or Nick Matthews and in reality they are quite a regular bunch that maybe anyone with a racket could have half a game with it may be less frightening joining a Squash Club. To start the ball rolling I have completed mine and challenged the Committee to do theirs. Come on everyone give it a go! It doesn’t have to be too serious but keep it legal and don’t frighten the horses please.

Mid-Week Off Peak Club Session

We have been asked if we could have a mid-week off peak Club Session and actually we think it is a very good idea and would welcome giving it a try. Clearly it won’t suit everyone but for some it may be ideal. So in order to try and gauge interest and to get the time and day right for the majority if you are interested please drop me a line indicating that and putting forward your preferred day and time. All responses welcome but those who actually want to take part will get preference on the weekday slot selection and timing, be it day or afternoon.

Please get in touch if you have any issues or suggestions and I hope to see you soon.

Regards
