The annual Christmas Handicap Tournament was upon us yet again last Saturday and the usual motley crew did their best to demonstrate why Burghfield doesn’t feature in the SRA equivalent of the Balloon D’Or.
This years event designed for 16 was slightly inconvenienced by their only being 15 of us despite our best efforts to prize someone else out of the bar. The Handicap Committee had obviously sat long into the night, unfortunately they weren’t talking about Squash. Nevertheless we applied the respective millstones around the necks of the players and played. The format was a PAR scoring to 11 one game match and everyone played 4 times. By dint of then applying the Duckworth Lewis method suitably amended with the Walbourne “averages” for missed matches and left handers a Winner and runners up duly emerged.
Congratulations then to Gareth May for winning all his matches and being the overall champion. The joint runners up on countback were Sarah Heller and Mike Walbourne so well done to them too.
5 players won 3 out of their 4 matches and these were Brian Fielding, Sarah, Imran, Peter Vosky and Mike.
The wooden spoon was awarded to Neil Rowlands who lost all of his matches however three of them went to deuce so the handicapping wasn’t completely to pot. Neil clearly doesn’t like the match ball call….. although he is very good with a packet of Doritos and a dip in the bar bless him. On that note James Fitch Won two and lost two on deuce so again the handicapping was on the money.
In summary a good evening was had by all and handicapping is something we are thinking of suggesting we use sometimes at Club Night to ratchet up the pressure and entertain the balcony.
