New Member Induction
We don’t have a defined induction process for new members. It depends on who is joining, what we do for them. Here are some of the options that new players may wish to consider or join in with.
Club Night
Club night is on Saturdays between 5 to 7pm and anyone is welcome. It is a free for all so the numbers present and the standard is variable. The optimum number is about 7 people and it is high octane when a few of the 1st Team are playing but normally it is quite a mixed standard which is good for gauging people’s levels. It is a giant round robin and everyone mucks in and plays each other. The light meter is used as the timer so you get 8 minutes of heaven or hell quite randomly. This is sorted by a whiteboard with the player’s names on it. Again, it is very informal and newcomers get introduced to all and sundry which gives them a few faces they will recognise and could play. By and large all the regular players like a chat and will tell you who you need to play to get a decent game ie someone around the same level. You play as many 8 minutes as you can take and it finishes when the last man’s standing or woman sometimes.
Box Leagues
We have about 7/8 Box Leagues depending on availability of players. Playing periods are about 6 weeks per League of 5/6 people, so a maximum of 5 matches to play in 6 weeks. Steve Ryles is the League Administrator and he will need to know how good you are as we don’t insist people start in the bottom League as that just irritates everyone if a Superstar descends on them. The rule of thumb is we put people in one League below where we think they will end up. Hopefully then they win the League and we never hear anything more about it as everyone is happy. The problem is, to do that, we need to see you play or if you already have a Squash Levels number what that is. One of the Box Players from the Committee will play you if you don’t know or haven’t played anyone else in the Club. It isn’t a test or trial and we are only looking to know where to place you in the Leagues to start you off. If we get it wrong initially we will adjust it after the first League period.
Coaching
We have a number of coaches at the Club. We have a Level 3 Coach, several Level 2’s and 1’s. All are DBS, Child Protection and England Squash registered. We can sort coaching out if you want or need it. Additionally, we have a few other coaches on site and they help with the juniors or just do their own thing.
The above is a brief over view. Once you join the Club you will have access to the Members Directory if you need to contact anyone. For now the key contacts are:-
